Bust: Alshon Jeffery CHI, ADP: 26th, 11th WR
Let me preface this with saying, it was very tough to find a guy even being slightly overdraft in the NFC North currently. I chose Jeffery because I can see some flaws, which we will get to, with how high he is going in drafts.
With Marshall gone in 2015, this is the year for Alshon Jeffery to be the sure fire #1 WR in Chicago. All signs pointed to a huge 2015 season, but the injuries happened. Jeffery is hampered by a calf strain and was recently seen on crutches. Also, their #1 draft pick, Kevin White, will begin the season on the PUP list, and could possibly miss the entire 2015 season. Jeffery should be close to a 100% by the beginning of the season, but a calf strain is something that could linger. Also, with White going down, that will shift all coverage and double teams squarely on Jeffery.
But this offseason isn’t the only reason I am a bit sluggish to draft Jeffery as a boarderline #1 WR and in the 3rd round of fantasy drafts. I also saw a lack of game changing fantasy games last season. Jeffery had just two games over 15 fantasy points in 2015. Yes he was a model of consistency with 10 double-digit fantasy performance, but from your #1 WR you expect at least a couple weeks where he basically wins you your fantasy matchup that week. Compare his just 2 games of 15+ points to others being drafted around him: Randall Cobb (5), T.Y. Hilton (3), Mike Evans (4), Emmanuel Sanders (4), and Jordan Matthews (4).
On top of all of this, John Fox is now the coach in Chicago instead of pass-happy Marc Trestman. The passing game will be scaled down a bit. I am not saying Jeffery wont have a good season in 2015, I just think there is some major reason for concern for him being drafted as a #1 WR. I like him more around the 13-15 WR taken and in the 4th-5th round.
Other NFC North Players I dislike at their current ADP: Golden Tate 55th, 23rd WR, Martellus Bennett 61st, 6th TE
Now that we have concluded the AFC, we move onto the NFC. We will start with my personal favorite division, the NFC North!
Sleeper: Joique Bell DET, ADP: 58th, 23rd RB
Let’s pump the brakes on Ameer Abdullah train for one minute please. Bell had 8 games with double-digit fantasy points in 2014, and that was splitting with Reggie Bush and Theo Reddick. Bell, whom has had some injury issues in the past, proved in 2014 he can carry a full workload with 14 games of double digit carries. Bell finished 14 overall in RB fantasy scoring in 2014. Even though he accomplished all of this in 2014, he is only being drafted as a flex option in the late 6th round this season.
This is absolutely baffling to me to say the least. Everyone’s sexy pick this season seems to be the rookie, Ameer Abdullah, currently the back-up RB behind Bell. And after just one preseason game, the hype exploded after a solid performance by Abdullah. Abdullah is a small, explosive running back. That being said, hasn’t Bell already had to share carries with a RB like Abdullah? Bell had Bush last season to deal with, and all he did was pile up 1,182 total yards, 8 TD’s, and got a nice 3 year contract extension as the icing on the cake.
The Lions’ main guy week one will be Bell. He isn’t as flashy as Abdullah, but has proven he can get it done in the NFL. Coming from a division two college, Bell has always had to overcome obstacles and prove himself over and over. A 5’9 195lb running back out of college is just another challenge for Bell. I absolutely love Joique as a top 15 option at RB this season.
Other NFC North Players I like at their current ADP: Calvin Johnson 18th, 6th WR, Davante Adams 134th, 46th WR, Eddie Royal 190th, 59th WR
